Rzymsko-Katolicka diecezja Wilcannia - Forbes obejmuje zachodnią połowę stanu Nowa Południowa Walia. Diecezja ta została powołana do istnienia w 1887 r, jako the diocese of Wilcannia, w celu duchowej opieki nad katolikami mieszkającymi w odizolowanej części kolonii. Faktycznie jednak biskup nigdy na stałe nie rezydował w Wilcannia. Bp. John Dunne, pierwszy biskup tej diecezji, wybrał na swoją rezydencję w miejsce Wilcannia rozwijające się Broken Hill i tam wybudował katedrę. W 1918, granice diecezji zostały przesunięte na wschód, pociągając za sobą zmianę nawzy na diecezję Wilcannia-Forbes. Budowę kościoła katedralnego ukończono 2 lipca 1905r., a 17 sierpnia dedykowano ją Najświętszemu Sercu Jezusa.

W stuletniej historii parafii katedralnej pojawiają się również polskie nazwiska. Parafianami byli Polacy pracujący w tutejszych kopalniach. Byli oni odwiedzani również przez polskich duszpasterzy, m.in. ks. Zbigniewa Pajdaka SChr. W parafii katedralnej posługę duszpasterską pełnili także polscy księża: ks. Mirosław Gębicki oraz w ostatnich latach ks. Przemysław Karasiuk SChr. 

Celebracje 100-lecia rozpoczęły się sobotnią wieczorną Mszą św. pod przewodnictwem bp. Chirtopher'a Toohey, ordynariusza diecezji. Po mszy św. parafianie oraz goście wzieli udział w oficjalnym przyjęciu zorganizowanym w June Bronhill Audytorium. Były to dla wielu wzruszające chwile spotkania po latach. Niedzielna liturgia oraz spotkanie po jej zakończeniu w Audytorium Sacred Heart Primary School było pełną radości kontynuacją świętowania jubileuszu przez byłych i obecnych parafian.

Środa, 6 lipca, była dniem celebracji jubileuszu w wymiarze diecezjalnym. Na zaproszenie miejscowego ordynariusza do Broken Hill przybyli australijscy biskupi, delegacje lokalnych diecezji, kapłani diecezji Wilcannia-Forbes oraz innych diecezji, przedstawiciele władz stanowych i federalnych, jak również goście z zagranicy. Wieczornej Mszy św. przewodniczył bp. Christopher Toohey w otoczeniu przedstawicieli Episkopatu Australii oraz licznie zgromadzonego presbiterium i wiernych. Po liturgii zaproszeni goście oraz parafianie zgromadzili się na przyjęciu zoranizowanym na terenie Golf Club.

Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish of Broken Hill, our parish, takes in most of the far north-western region of New  South Wales, Australia. Broken Hill is the biggest town in the far west. The town was founded in the 1870's following the discovery of large deposits of lead, zinc, and silver. The quality and quantity of silver in the ore lead to Broken Hill being named "The Silver City."

The parish was established around 1883. In 1887, the diocese of Wilcannia-Forbes was erected. Very soon after that, Broken Hill became the place of residence for the bishop and in 1903 the Cathedral was begun. It was officially opened on 2 July 1905 and dedicated to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on 17 August 1905.

With the growing town population, there was also a growing need to cater for the greater needs of parishioners and their families. The cathedral parish was divided into 4 parishes: All Saints in South Broken Hill, St Mary's in Railwaytown or west Broken Hill, Ss Peter & Paul, North Broken Hill, and the Cathedral in the centre of the city. Each new parish built a church and a parish school. The parishes prospered with the city, and over the years the church has played a prominent role in the life of Broken Hill.

In the 1980's and 90's the mining industry went into decline, and with an uncertain future, the population declined as well. The bishop at that time decided to reunite the various parishes once again to make just one parish centred on the Sacred Heart Cathedral. Since then, our parish has continued its mission . We have an active role in proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ through our worship and celebrations of prayer, the many apostolic works of our priests and parishioners, and our parish school. The Catholic Church has a strong presence in the local community through such organisations as the St Vincent de Paul Society and the Knights of the Southern Cross.

The territory of the parish covers an area about 450km by 350km and is bounded by the Queensland border in the north and the South Australian border to the west of Broken Hill. Most of this territory is semi-desert grazing land for sheep and cattle. The surrounding area is sparsely settled. As well as the many Catholic families living on stations, the parish includes the towns of Wilcannia, Menindee, and Tibooburra. Each town has its own Catholic community that includes both town residents and station families and workers.

Our parish has a Catholic population of around 5500 people, most of whom live in Broken Hill.
